On the upcoming Irish Cave Rescue Organisation’s (ICRO) Open Day, this free event promises a unique blend of excitement and learning for all attendees.
Visitors will get a rare, up-close look at the latest in cave rescue equipment and witness thrilling demonstrations by the skilled ICRO team. These experts, who tackle the most challenging underground emergencies, will showcase their cutting-edge tools and techniques, offering a glimpse into the world of subterranean rescues.
The event will also feature captivating stories from real-life rescues, highlighting the bravery and expertise of the ICRO team. One such tale includes the dramatic 2022 rescue of a stranded caver from a treacherous sea cave in Co. Mayo. Despite adverse weather conditions, the team expertly navigated a 50-metre cliff to reach the casualty, working in coordination with RNLI lifeboats, Coast Guard units, and other emergency services to ensure a successful rescue.
The Irish Cave Rescue Organisation, a national voluntary group composed of dedicated cavers from across Ireland, has been a cornerstone of safety and rescue operations for over 63 years. With rescue equipment strategically placed in key locations and a main store in Cladagh Glen Nature Reserve, County Fermanagh, ICRO stands ready to respond to cave-related emergencies at a moment’s notice.
