Earth and Stone: Cave Pottery SOLD OUT

Earth and Stone: Cave Pottery

Immerse yourself in a truly unique experience where art and nature come together in the stunning setting of the Marble Arch Caves. This special event invites you to explore the ancient craft of pottery within the heart of a natural limestone cave. You will discover how raw clay can be transformed into beautiful, timeless pieces inspired by the earth itself. A unique opportunity to connect with an ancient craft in a stunning setting – perfect for those who love creativity and nature.

Event Instructor

Lisa McCabe, the creative force behind Corranny Forest Pottery, is passionate about the raw beauty of bare clay techniques. She describes her work as Contemporary Antiquities, drawing inspiration from ancient and archaeological ceramics. As an emerging artist, she allows her pieces to evolve organically, guiding her toward a stronger artistic voice and a deeper connection with the visual arts.

Pottery Hand-Building Session

Join an intimate, hands-on pottery workshop inspired by prehistoric pottery-making techniques. With a maximum of 10 participants, each session is tailored to the group’s abilities, offering a relaxed and creative experience with full guidance and support as you craft your own unique piece.

Throughout this event Lisa will demonstrate and show how you can use coil, slab, and pinch methods – along with various moulds – you’ll craft a decorative (non-functional) vessel. Natural and coloured slips, along with materials like bog, grasses, and other earthy textures, will also be used to embellish your piece.

All creations will be bisque fired after the event by Lisa at Corranny Forest Pottery. Finished pieces will be available for collection at the Marble Arch Caves from Tuesday 20th May from 9:00am.

Show Cave

As part of this event, you’ll be guided through the stunning show cave to your designated pottery-making area. Along the way, our expert guide will share the fascinating story of the cave’s age and formation, revealing how it was sculpted over millennia by the powerful forces of water.

What to Bring

All materials will be provided for the event, but we recommend the following to ensure your comfort on the day:

  • An apron will be provided, though we advise wearing old clothes you don’t mind getting a bit messy.
  • The cave temperature is a constant 9–10°C, so please dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. A waterproof jacket is also recommended due to drips inside the cave and possible wet weather on entry/exit.
  • Bring a small hand towel for any water droplets from the cave ceiling, and a warm drink in a flask to stay comfortable and hydrated.
