Back to the Stone Age

Walking Through Time

Under the supervision of our event guide you will explore the essential skills that the earliest pioneers on this land needed to survive and thrive. After a brief discussion Adam will teach you how natural local materials (including Nettles) were gathered  to make cordage and ropes. You will have an opportunity to make your own rope.  Adam will also discuss the importance of “Lithic technology” (Stone tools) and briefly demonstrate the art of flint knapping where a piece of flint can be shaped into a myriad of different tools via different techniques.

Guided Walk

This guided walk will take you through Killykeegan Nature Reserve with Cuilcagh mountain providing a stunning backdrop. As you walk through the rich limestone grassland you will uncover an abundance of archaeological features that show the true history of the area.

Event Guide

Adam has been involved in Archaeology for over six years. This has included working for a time as a field archaeologist in Northern Ireland. When studying they developed a keen interest in experimental archaeology, where people try to recreate crafts and activities as they were done in the past to better understand them. They have led workshops in cordage, jewellery making, handmade pottery and flint knapping. Adam’s breadth of knowledge, interest and natural enthusiasm will bring this ancient world to life.

Bring a camera/mobile to capture your own snapshots of this wonderful reserve and its archaeological features.

The walk begins at Killykeeghan Nature Reserve. Please meet and register your arrival with your Event Guide Adam 15 minutes prior to the walk start time. Please follow the link for directions, the meeting point is the location marked ‘Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail and facilities ’ on the map on the following link (see directions).
