Cave Lighting Project
A major investment in a more energy-efficient and sustainable cave lighting system
In 2022, Marble Arch Caves undertook a major project to replace the lighting system throughout the show cave with a new dynamic LED lighting system.
The project formed part of a significant investment in the attraction, designed to enhance the visitor experience while supporting the long-term protection of the unique underground environment.
Lighting the caves more sustainably
The new LED system provides a number of environmental benefits.
The lights use less energy than the previous system and produce lower levels of heat, helping to reduce the impact of artificial lighting within the cave environment. The system also allows the duration of illumination to be carefully controlled, with cave lighting operated through switches within the cave.
This means that areas of the cave can remain unlit when not required, reducing unnecessary energy use and limiting the duration of artificial light exposure.
At the same time, the dynamic lighting system allows our guides to highlight the remarkable geology, calcite formations, underground rivers and passages that make Marble Arch Caves such a distinctive visitor experience.
A project underground
Installing a new lighting system within an active river cave was a significant undertaking.
Work began in September 2022, with contractors working in temperatures of approximately 10°C and within an environment affected by changing water levels following periods of rainfall.
Equipment and materials had to be transpor
ted into the cave through the stepped entrance before being moved along the underground passages to the areas where work was taking place.
The installation extended through approximately 1.5 miles of the show cave, including the section of underground river where visitors experience the short boat journey and the pathways leading through the cave’s spectacular formations and passages.
The project required careful planning and coordination to ensure that the work could be completed within this challenging and sensitive environment.
Investing in the future
The new dynamic LED lighting system represents a significant investment in the future of Marble Arch Caves.
By combining lower energy consumption, reduced heat output and greater control over illumination with an enhanced visitor experience, the project demonstrates how investment in infrastructure can support both responsible tourism and the long-term care of our natural heritage.
The lighting system continues to form an important part of our approach to managing the visitor experience while respecting the unique underground environment of Marble Arch Caves.
Work started in September along the 250 metres section of subterranean river where visitors enjoy the short underground boat trip, the contractors have now progressed to work deeper within the show cave along areas of pathway showcasing some of the spectacular calcite formations and cave passages.
