Willow Weaving in the Caves
Step back in time and into the Earth. Join us for a truly unique experience: a Willow Weaving Workshop set deep within the extraordinary surroundings of the Marble Arch Caves.
Guided by local weaver Lucy, you’ll learn the ancient spiral weave technique, crafting two functional baskets from natural willow. This hands-on beginner level workshop blends age-old tradition with the atmospheric beauty of one of Ireland’s most iconic natural wonders.
Event Instructor
Nestled in the Fermanagh countryside, Lucy is the founder of Navar Willow — a small creative business rooted in nature. As a skilled willow weaver, basket maker, and artist, she grows and harvests her own willow by hand. Her work blends traditional techniques with contemporary design, creating both functional baskets and nature-inspired wall art.
Describing the process of preparing the willow Lucy said, “The willow we will be weaving with for the spiral weave workshop is called Black Maul. This is our own home grown Fermanagh willow. It is a lovely smooth and soft brown willow which is easy to work with. We harvested the willow from our field in February and it has been left to dry until now. Preparing the willow will take place approximately a week before the workshop depending on the water temperature. The willow will be fully submerged for a number of days and then left to mellow for a couple of days, then it will be in perfect condition to weave with.”
Guided by a deep respect for the land, Lucy crafts each piece with care, reflecting her commitment to sustainability and the timeless bond between place and craft.
